Identifying and Treating Emerald Ash Borer

Emerald ash borer (EAB) is an invasive species of beetle that can cause significant damage to ash trees. If you have ash trees on your property, it's important to learn how to identify and treat EAB before it's too late.

Identification:

The first step in identifying EAB is to look for signs of infestation. These signs include:

  1. D-shaped exit holes in the bark

  2. S-shaped tunnels beneath the bark

  3. Splitting or cracking in the bark

  4. Thinning of the canopy and dying branches

If you notice any of these signs, you may have an EAB infestation.

Treatment:

There are several methods for treating EAB, including:

  1. Insecticides: Insecticides can be applied to the bark of the tree or injected directly into the trunk. These treatments can be effective, but they must be applied regularly to prevent reinfestation.

  2. Tree removal: If the infestation is severe, it may be necessary to remove the tree entirely. This is the most drastic option but may be necessary to prevent the spread of EAB to other trees.

  3. Biological control: Some natural predators of EAB, such as parasitic wasps, can be introduced to help control the infestation. This method can be effective but may take longer to see results.

If you suspect that your ash trees may be infested with EAB, it's important to take action as soon as possible. Early detection and treatment can help prevent the spread of the infestation and save your trees.
